Mint

Who doesn't love mint? It instantly spruces up a cocktail, any cobbler or crisp, a summer salad, and tastes good too.

Caring for mint is pretty low maintenance, especially if you follow these tips:

TIPS:

  • Mint spreads like WILDFIRE. If potted with other herbs, it will infiltrate your pot and overcrowd other spices, which is no Bueno. So it prefers to be potted on its own

  • Prune mint often! It encourages growth and helps ensure mint is tasty and healthy.

    • Take spears or pinch the tips of mint regularly to promote bushier, fuller growth.

    • Remove buds as soon as mint starts flowering!

POTTING:

  • Select a pot with drainage holes - it should be at least 12 inches in diameter. A clay container is ideal because it allows excess soil moisture to escape through its walls and drainage holes.

  • Fill the pot with a quality potting mix! You can work in some balanced fertilize if you’d like.

  • Plant your mint at the same depth it was growing in its nursery pot. Press the soil down, reaching about 1 inch below the container's top.

LIGHT:

  • Mint tolerates a little shade but truly thrives in full sunlight (about 6 hours of sun per day)

WATER:

  • How often? Water mint whenever the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch.

  • What time of day? This goes for most herbs and plants, water mint in the morning so it has plenty of moisture during the day and doesn’t dry out as temperatures rise!
